What a PvE realm means on a private server

On a PvE realm, world PvP is opt-in. You can level, farm and do world quests without being attacked by the other faction unless you flag yourself, enter a PvP objective or attack a flagged player. Dungeons, raids, battlegrounds and arenas work exactly as they do on PvP realms; the ruleset only changes the open world.

PvE private servers exist for every expansion. WotLK has the most, Legion has a solid set, and the newest expansions (Dragonflight, Shadowlands, Warlords of Draenor) are almost entirely PvE realms. Many of the larger networks run a PvE realm alongside a PvP one, often sharing an account and, on some networks, cross-realm queues.

Choosing a PvE private server

The trade-off is population. Several of the largest realms by reported population use a PvP ruleset, and a lot of PvE realms report small communities, which matters when you need 25 people for Icecrown Citadel. The exceptions are worth knowing: Project Ascension on Vanilla, Tauri Evermoon on MoP and ChromieCraft on WotLK all report populations in the hundreds or more. Playerbot-assisted realms, which fill dungeon groups with AI characters, are also mostly PvE and make small servers far more playable solo.

Beyond that, the usual questions apply: rates, whether the shop sells gear, and how recent the reviews are.
