Common questions about WoW Private Servers

01

Are WoW private servers legal?

Running a private server breaks Blizzard's terms of service and copyright, and Blizzard has shut large projects down with cease-and-desist letters before (Nostalrius in 2016 is the best-known case). Players have not been targeted, but you are playing outside Blizzard's protection, so keep your Battle.net credentials completely separate.
02

Are WoW private servers free to play?

Yes. Essentially every private server is free, with hosting paid for by an optional donation shop. What that shop sells is the thing to check: some realms sell cosmetics and character services only, others sell gear, and player reviews on each listing usually say which.
03

What is the best WoW private server in 2026?

It depends on the expansion and rates you want, so start with the expansion pages. By reported population, the largest server we list is Warmane Icecrown (WotLK); for a vote-based ranking, the Best Private Servers page is updated daily from community votes.
04

What is the most popular expansion for private servers?

Wrath of the Lich King, by a wide margin: roughly half of all the servers we list are WotLK. Vanilla is a clear second, followed by Cataclysm, MoP and Legion.
05

How do I connect to a WoW private server?

Register on the server's website, install the client version it requires, and point the client at the server. On Vanilla through Cataclysm clients that means editing realmlist.wtf; on MoP and later it is the SET portal line in WTF/Config.wtf, and Legion and newer clients usually need the server's launcher or a patched executable as well.
06

Is it safe to play on a WoW private server?

Generally yes, with the same care you would take on any small website: use a unique password, download the client from a known guide or from the server itself, and do not install unfamiliar launchers from unofficial mirrors. Servers can also close without notice, so avoid putting money into a shop on a realm you have only just joined.
07

How does DivineTop order its server list?

The default Recommended sort is a score that leans mostly on reported population, with review rating, recent votes, profile completeness and listing age also counting; the Best Private Servers page explains the scoring in detail. Population is self-reported by each server; what we do check regularly is whether each server's website still responds, and we remove closed servers from the list.

WoW private servers, explained

A WoW private server is a World of Warcraft realm run by an independent team on emulator software, not by Blizzard. Most are free to play and funded by donations. They exist because the community wants versions of the game retail no longer offers: a permanent 3.3.5a Wrath realm, Vanilla at its original patch, a Cataclysm world with no level squish, or a custom ruleset such as classless characters, permadeath or x100 rates.

This page lists every server we know of, with filters for expansion, realm type (PvP, PvE, RP, custom), rates, language and reported population. Each listing has player reviews from signed-in users, and closed servers are removed from the list.

How the list is ordered

The default "Recommended" order is a score that leans mostly on reported population, with reviews, recent votes and profile completeness also counting; the best private servers page explains the scoring in detail, and the Top Rated, Popular and New tabs switch to a single-factor sort. Population figures are self-reported by each server; we do not measure them ourselves, so treat them as a rough guide and read the reviews.

For a vote-driven ranking instead, see the best private servers page, where guests and signed-in players vote daily. For a breakdown of where players actually are across expansions, see the private server report.

Browse by expansion

WotLK private servers make up roughly half of every listing on the site. Vanilla is second and mostly blizzlike 1x. TBC, Cataclysm, MoP and Legion each have a smaller scene with one or two large servers. WoD, BFA, Shadowlands and Dragonflight have a handful between them.

Everything you need to know before getting started

How to choose a private server

Pick the expansion first; nothing else matters until you know whether you want Vanilla's 40-man raids, Wrath's Icecrown or Legion's Mythic+. Then narrow by rates: 1x means leveling is the game, 3x to 7x means endgame in days, and instant or x100 means you are there for PvP or funserver content. Realm type (PvP, PvE, RP, custom) and language come next; several large realms are built around Spanish-, Russian- or German-speaking communities.

Treat reported population with caution, since servers report it themselves. Cross-check it against the reviews, the server's Discord, and the website status on its listing page: we regularly check whether each server's website still responds and flag the ones that do not, because a dead website usually means a dead realm.

Getting connected

Register on the server's website, install the client version it requires, point the client at the server, and log in. Vanilla (1.12.1), TBC (2.4.3), WotLK (3.3.5a) and Cataclysm (4.3.4) use a realmlist.wtf file you edit by hand; our client overview links to a download guide for each. From MoP onward there is no realmlist: the address goes in the SET portal line of WTF/Config.wtf, and Legion and later clients also need a patched executable or the server's launcher, so use the download the server provides.

The addons library is sorted by expansion so you get versions that load on your client. To host a realm for friends, start with the repacks guide.

Safety and legality

Private servers are unofficial and not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment; running one is against Blizzard's terms, and large projects have been shut down by cease-and-desist letters. Players are not the ones at legal risk, but take the same precautions as on any small website: never reuse your Battle.net or email password, and be wary of realms whose shop sells best-in-slot gear rather than cosmetics. Reviews on each listing are the quickest way to learn how a server handles its shop, its staff and its wipes.

About this list

This directory lists 113 active servers across 10 expansions. Sponsored listings appear first and are labelled. Closed servers are removed, and servers whose website stops responding are flagged on their page.
