What a PvP realm means on a private server

On a PvP realm, PvP is always on outside your faction's own cities and starting zones. You can be attacked while questing, farming or waiting for a boat, and a level 80 camping a flight path is part of the deal. Battlegrounds and arenas exist on every ruleset; the PvP label is about the open world.

PvP is the most common ruleset on private servers and most of the largest realms by reported population use it. WotLK accounts for about half of all PvP private servers, Vanilla is second, and Cataclysm, MoP and Legion each have a smaller set. Most PvP realms also describe themselves as blizzlike, though a fair number add custom content on top.

Choosing a PvP private server

Faction balance matters more than anything else. Large realms such as Warmane Icecrown and Lordaeron on WotLK, Whitemane Maelstrom on Cataclysm and Kronos III on Vanilla are where both sides are most likely to be online; check recent reviews for balance complaints on smaller realms. Language is the other filter to set early; several large PvP realms are built around Spanish- or Russian-speaking communities.

Then decide what kind of PvP you want. Open-world fights suit 1x and low-rate realms where leveling takes long enough to meet people. Arena and battleground players are better served by mid-rate or instant realms, where everyone is at cap; the instant endgame page covers those. If the idea of being ganked at level 34 is a dealbreaker, the PvE realms keep everything else and make world PvP opt-in.
