What instant endgame means on a private server

An instant endgame server starts every new character at or near max level, usually with a set of gear from a vendor, gold, professions maxed and mounts learned. The point is to be in an arena, a battleground or a raid within ten minutes of making an account. Instant 80 on WotLK is by far the most common form; instant 60 on Vanilla, 70 on TBC, 85 on Cataclysm and 90 on MoP also exist.

Almost all of them are also custom servers in some way: free starter gear, custom vendors, solo-queue arenas, spectator systems, or raids retuned for small groups. Population is mostly small; a handful of instant realms, some on bigger networks and some independent, report hundreds of players.

Who instant servers suit, and the catch

They suit arena players, people with an hour a night, and anyone who has leveled to 80 enough times. Warmane Blackrock is the best-known instant 80 realm and one of the largest listed, with solo queue and arena spectating; BattleArenas is a smaller WotLK realm built entirely around ladder PvP; RetroWoW offers instant 60 on Vanilla with five-player raid scaling, and the Russian-language Panda WoW Fun does instant 90 for MoP arenas.

There are two catches. First, when leveling and gearing are free, the shop tends to sell whatever is left, which can mean stronger gear or enchants, so check reviews for pay-to-win complaints before grinding a ladder. Second, turnover is high: instant realms launch fast, empty fast and often reset seasonally.
