What custom means on a private server

Custom covers everything from light changes to a different game. At one end are blizzlike realms with quality-of-life additions: cross-faction grouping, transmog on an old client, playerbots. In the middle are servers that keep the leveling game but add content, such as new bosses, retuned raids or extra zones. At the far end are projects that replace core systems: classless talent builds, level 255 caps, five-player raid retunes, permadeath, or survival rules with full loot.

Most custom private servers are built on WotLK, because the 3.3.5a client is the easiest to modify and has the deepest developer tooling. Vanilla, TBC and Legion have a few custom projects each.

Choosing a custom private server

Decide how far from the original game you want to go. Frostmane keeps 1x WotLK leveling and adds custom PvE endgame; WoW MasterWork adds custom endgame, including new legendary weapons, at x7 rates; Unlimited WoW is a level 255 funserver; The Last Crusade turns Azeroth into a full-loot survival game with free-for-all PvP outside Dalaran. All four are custom, and they have almost nothing else in common.

Custom projects live or die by a small team, so check the changelog and Discord for recent updates, whether the custom content is documented anywhere, and what reviews say about balance and the shop. Custom servers are also where instant max level is most common; the instant endgame page collects those. If you would rather have the original game with as few changes as possible, the blizzlike realms are the opposite end of the spectrum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Private Servers

01

What is a custom WoW private server?

A server that deliberately changes the game beyond rates: anything from quality-of-life tweaks and cross-faction play to new classes, zones, raids retuned for five players, level 255 caps, survival rules or classless talent systems. The label covers a very wide range.
02

Are custom servers mostly WotLK?

Yes. The 3.3.5a client is the easiest to modify and has the most developer tooling, so most custom private servers are built on WotLK. Vanilla, TBC and Legion have a few custom projects each.
03

Is a custom server the same as a funserver?

Not always. Funservers (instant max level, custom gear, level 255 caps) are one kind of custom server. Others keep 1x rates and standard leveling but add content, such as Frostmane on WotLK, or rework the game entirely, such as the survival-style The Last Crusade.
04

What should I check before joining a custom server?

Whether the custom content is documented, how often the server updates, whether the shop sells power, and what reviews say about balance. Custom projects depend on a small team, so an active changelog matters more here than on a blizzlike realm.
