What an RP realm means on a private server

An RP realm asks you to stay in character in public channels, follow a naming policy (no "Xxlegolasxx"), and respect other players' scenes. Most also run staff-led events, storylines or player guilds with their own lore. Mechanically an RP realm is a PvE or PvP realm underneath; the difference is the rules and the people.

RP private servers are a small slice of the scene and most report small populations. WotLK has the most, partly because 3.3.5a is easy to build custom RP tools on, and there is a handful of roleplay projects on Dragonflight and The War Within clients for people who want modern zones. Ignore headline population and look at activity instead. A realm with thirty regulars who post in-character in Discord every day is better for roleplay than a realm with a thousand players and no RP. Look for scheduled events, a forum or Discord with recent in-character threads, and reviews that mention the community rather than the scripting.
